Happy 2026 Lunar New Year: Quick L10n Trivia & Tips

Get ready! February 17, 2026, marks the beginning of the next Lunar New Year. For localization professionals targeting Asian markets, this is the busiest and most critical cultural event of the year.

Here are a few quick L10n facts to keep in mind for the upcoming cycle:

1. Enter the Horse (2026) 2026 is the Year of the Horse (specifically, the Fire Horse). In Chinese culture, the Horse symbolizes energetic positivity, speed, and immediate success—often referenced by the idiom "馬到成功" (instant success upon arrival of the horse). Localization teams should ensure marketing imagery reflects strength, elegance, and forward momentum, rather than stubbornness.

2. The "Upside Down" Fortune A common pitfall for non-native designers is "correcting" the orientation of the character 福 (fú; fortune). During the New Year, this character is traditionally displayed upside down on doors. The word for "upside down" (倒, dào) sounds exactly like the word for "arrive" (到, dào). Therefore, an upside-down 福 symbolizes that "fortune has arrived."

3. Color Coding is Crucial While red and gold are universally recognized as auspicious colors for wealth and luck, the absence of certain colors is equally important. Avoid using white or black extensively in festive campaigns, as these colors are traditionally associated with mourning and funerals in many Sinophone cultures.
